An explorative journey.
The research work U1 investigates the U1 subway line in Berlin from an Urban Design perspective.
The U1 as one of the first railway lines in Berlin has been of great importance for the structural development of the
city and is used by many residents and visitors in the present. What seems to be a taken-for-granted element in the
urban fabric of Berlin is the expression of a complex planning process.
We found that we could not simply investigate the U1 as a means of transport, but as a location which is setting up diverse places and a complex space.
Additionally, the fact that the U1 is a line with one part of the railway overground while the other part is underground, constitutes a very unusual and thus interesting space continuum within the U-Bahn system and also within the city.
